Join us for an exciting 2-day Road Trip, Oct 23-24, to visit personalized competency-based schools in the St. Louis Region! Experience firsthand the innovative approaches in place from elementary through high school levels. Witness personalized competency-based learning in action and discover how students are empowered to be an integral part of their learning. Engage with dedicated staff and enthusiastic students, and network with educators statewide during collaborative sessions over lunch and breaks.

Mehlville High School & MOSAIC Elementary School OR Hancock Place High School
Option 1: Mehlville High School & MOSAIC Elementary School
Participants will start their day with a visit to the student-focused FLEX classrooms at Mehlville High School. Lunch will be provided nearby at the Jefferson Barracks in the Missouri Civil War Museum. Then participants will spend the afternoon at MOSAIC Elementary School to observe how it provides student choice and personalized learning.

This half-day academic program is for motivated students seeking a unique challenge at Mehlville High School. Students in the FLEX program can direct their learning by engaging in a competency-based program that allows learners to demonstrate proficiency in multiple ways. Students master the same curriculum objectives throughout the year with an emphasis on the transference of skills and connections between courses. FLEX teachers strive to create opportunities for students to have a voice and choice to increase ownership of and accountability for their learning. Following the classroom visits, participants will engage with a panel of teachers/students.
🏫 MOSAIC Elementary School

MOSAIC is an acronym for Mehlville and Oakville Students Achieve, Imagine and Create. The school first opened its doors to students in the 2017-2018 school year. MOSAIC offers a unique learning experience that allows for increased student choice and personalized learning. MOSAIC provides a learning experience for the child everyday based on their passions, interests and pace of learning. The MOSAIC Elementary School experience is personalized for each student. Following the classroom visits, participants will engage with a panel of teachers/students.
Option 2: Hancock High School
Participants will spend the day at competency-based Hancock High School. Lunch will be provided on-site and include a Q & A Time.

Participants will visit this competency-based high school and will engage in a combination of meeting with teachers and students and observing classrooms. Time will be spent observing the Targeted Learning Time–Reteaching/Relearning Time. This unique part of the school day focuses on flexible scheduling to ensure all students are working on standards/learning targets not yet met. It was exceptionally successful this past school year. Visiting teams will observe classrooms at this time, and will have the opportunity to observe competency-based grading and assessment in real time. Teams will be able to get a true sense of how the cycle of feedback, reflection, and revision works in practice in just about any classroom.

Participants will start the day with classroom room visits at Parkwood Elementary School. Next they will travel a short distance to the Pattonville Learning Center across from Holman Middle School, where they will end the experience with a Student/Teacher Panel while enjoying lunch.
